Chapter 20
Jenny, in the Maldives
âThe stars have aligned!â Layla declared, in a dramatic entrance to the bookstore.
I looked up from my laptop. âThey have?â
âThey have.â She sauntered in and perched on my one small book table, shifting a novel about time travel with her bottom, the ends of her hair tickling the covers of the other books. âGuess who has a day off tomorrow.â
Well, I knew I couldnât afford to take my day off tomorrow, so ⦠âYou?â
âAnd you!â Layla cried in return. âWe have a day off together. But thatâs not all.â
I stopped her there. âNoooo, no, I have to work tomorrow. Iâm sorry.â
âNo, you donât,â Layla said. âTomorrow is Friday. This place will be c-l-o-s-e-d. And â¦â She paused before teasingly pointing her finger at me. âRish also has the day off tomorrow. But thatâs still not all!â
âOh, Iâd love to hang out with you both, butââ
She held up her hand. âI know for a fact that you havenât taken any of your days off since you opened.â
âBut I canât. I have the new event next week and thereâs still so much to do.â
âLike what?â
âLike â¦â I faltered. In reality, I was totally organised and ready, books ordered, cocktails devised. But that didnât mean I didnât want to go over it all tenfold beforehand, and Iâd been hoping to spend my day off tomorrow over in the space, making sure I knew how it was all going to look and work. âI canât list it all. I just know Iâm too busy.â
âDo you know what your problem is?â Layla asked, hands on hips.
âWhat?â
âYouâre one of those people who can fill every single hour of a day and you still donât feel like youâve done enough. There will never be enough hours in the day for you. But the crazy thing? You would have the same result if you only had one hour. Because you canât just do something and then let it go. Has anyone ever told you that?â
Well, yes, actually. I was trying to think of an answer when Layla picked up a book from my shelf.
âNow, about tomorrow,â she said, and tossed her super-long hair behind her shoulder, her eyes sparkling. âDo you know what this is?â
I looked at the cover of a book called Marine Life in the Maldives. âThatâs a fish.â
Layla rolled her eyes. âThis is a whale shark. Itâs one of the highlights of our oceans here.â
Taking the book from her hands, I studied the creature, who was a deep blue with a large rounded head and gaping mouth. His body was speckled with white dots. âI like him. Have you ever seen one?â
âI have. Do you want to see one?â
I nodded. âMmm, yeah, that would be cool. Wait, do I? Like, do you know where I could see one?â
âI might do. But you have to give yourself a day off and come with me tomorrow.â
âButââ
âLive a little,â she said. âBecause youâre only going to live in the Maldives once.â
That was how I
